Update

from Bermuda Racing 02/05/2026
Bermuda Racing secured the beautifully bred Somers Isles at this year’s renowned Arqana Breeze-Up Sale. Her sire Churchill, the dual Classic-winning son of Galileo, has already established himself as a proven top-class sire, responsible for elite Gr.1 winners including Vadeni and Blue Rose Cen.

The filly also carries a particularly exciting pedigree page for Bermuda Racing, featuring former flag bearer Flora Of Bermuda alongside Group performer Powerful Breeze within the family. Somers Isles will now join the team of Andrew Balding at Kingsclere, the same yard responsible for Flora Of Bermuda, adding another exciting chapter to this increasingly familiar and successful family line.

Speaking on the latest addition, Simon Scupham of Bermuda Racing noted - "She was a must-have for us at Arqana - albeit a different profile to our recent speed-focused buys, she still clocked a top ten time for fillies."

Pedigree Update

from Bermuda Racing 02/05/2026
Under the third dam of Somers Isles’ pedigree appears familiar Bermuda Racing flag bearer Flora Of Bermuda, who has already added another notable update to the page this season following her victory in the Listed Ellen Chaloner Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse for Wathnan Racing.

Speaking after the race, trainer Andrew Balding described the five-year-old as “a wonderful filly” and added that he believes “there’s a big one in her.” Everyone at Bermuda Racing has been incredibly proud to have played a part in Flora Of Bermuda’s journey, and it has been a pleasure to watch her continue to progress at the highest level. We very much hope that big one is still to come for new owners Wathnan Racing.

Naming History

The name 'Somers Isles' is another fitting nod to Bermuda’s rich history and heritage. The name is inspired by Admiral Sir George Somers, widely regarded as the founder of Bermuda, and provides a natural link alongside our recent purchase, Sea Venture.

The 'Somers Isles' was one of the early names for Bermuda, adopted following the arrival of the Sea Venture on the island in 1609. During a violent hurricane, Sir George Somers deliberately drove the Sea Venture onto Bermuda’s reefs to save those onboard, an event that ultimately led to the island’s permanent settlement and enduring historical significance.
